Flagi pokrył kurz to trzecia książka w dorobku giganta amerykańskiej prozy, pierwsza z cyklu poświęconego fikcyjnemu okręgowi Yoknapatawpha. Jesienią 1927 roku Faulkner z dumą posłał sążnisty, blisko sześciusetstronicowy maszynopis do wydawnictwa, pyszniąc się, że jest to TA książka, najdiabelniejsza, jaką dotąd napisał. Jego samozadowolenie na nic się nie zdało, nie mógł bowiem znaleźć dla niej wydawcy. Za namową pewnego redaktora skrócił ją więc znacznie i wydał jako Sartoris (1. wyd. pol. PIW 1960). Pełnej wersji nie opublikował za życia.
