Święte Triduum Paschalne obejmuje kolejne etapy misterium paschalnego Chrystusa: ucztę pożegnalną z Apostołami z antycypowaną w sposób bezkrwawy ofiarą w Wieczerniku, Jego śmierć na krzyżu, spoczynek w grobie i chwalebne Zmartwychwstanie. Pod koniec IV w. święte triduum stanowiły obrzędy trzech dni Wielkiego Piątku, Wielkiej Soboty i Niedzieli Zmartwychwstania, bez Wielkiego Czwartku. Czwartek kończył przygotowania do obchodu Paschy. Dopiero później (w VII w.) wprowadzono Mszę Wieczerzy Pańskiej i Wielki Czwartek połączono z obchodami Paschy.
